Someone Else's Addiction or Crisis

When someone you love is in crisis and you can’t fix it for them.

What it looks like

When someone you love is in crisis and you can't fix it for them.

Loving someone in crisis puts you close enough to feel all of it and too far away to change any of it. Being stuck here often looks like managing someone else’s emergency so constantly that your own life has quietly stopped moving. And after enough time, you stop trusting your own read on it.

Where to start

The techniques that help most here.

If the chaos of someone else’s crisis is crowding your own thinking, start with Clear the Cache. If you’re too close to see the pattern, step back with The Cloud.

02 Clear the CacheGet the noise out of your head so you can see what you’re actually stuck on.
05 The CloudWiden the view around it.
09 Own ItFind what’s actually yours in this and learn to set down what isn’t.
Common questions

Good to know.

Is this a substitute for Al-Anon, therapy, or crisis intervention?

No. Please use those resources for anything urgent or ongoing. This is for the parts of the situation that are yours to work through, alongside the support you’re already using.

Can this help me if the other person won’t get help?

Yes. The work here is about your part: what’s yours to carry, and what isn’t, regardless of what the other person chooses.

Often, not always

What else this tends to bring up.

This isn’t about being similar. It’s about what shows up in the same season, in Bill’s experience. If more than one of these fits right now, that’s normal, not a sign you’re more stuck than usual.
