How to Move Forward When You Don't Know What to Do

Sooner or later, life puts all of us somewhere we never expected to be. This book isn’t about resolving conflict with other people. It’s about the internal kind of stuck: the fears, the patterns, the stories we keep telling ourselves. Here you will learn to choose from eleven techniques built over more than twenty years in the mediation room, to help you move through some of life’s toughest problems.

Everyone gets stuck.

A relationship ends. A career changes. Someone we love is gone. The future you imagined suddenly looks very different. In those moments, the question isn’t whether you’re stuck. It’s how you move forward when you don’t know what to do.

For more than twenty years as a professional mediator, Bill’s job hasn’t been to tell people what to do. It’s been to help them discover what to do next.

Inside, the Unstuck Techniques show you how to:

You’ve been stuck long enough. Let this book help you.

Stabilize the Situation

To begin, I want you to do one thing: pause. Not to fix anything and not to figure anything out. Just pause.

When you feel stuck, something quiet but powerful is going on inside you. Everything you are thinking about starts to feel equally urgent, even when you don’t realize it. The serious problems and the small ones blur together, and your nervous system starts to treat your whole life as one giant crisis that has to be resolved all at once.

Stabilize the Situation breaks that pattern. It works by doing something that sounds almost too simple: you shift your attention, even for a moment, to what’s already working. What’s still standing. What you can count on right now.

Because in nearly every hard situation I’ve ever seen people in, some parts of a person’s life are still intact. Something is still holding them up. Something is still working. Something is still okay.

That’s the first technique. There are ten more.
