Adult Children

When the relationship has to change shape and neither of you knows how.

What it looks like

When the relationship with your adult child gets stuck.

The relationship with a child doesn’t end when they leave home. It has to change shape, and a lot of parents and adult children get stuck trying to keep the old shape going. It looks like advice nobody asked for, distance nobody wanted, or a version of the relationship that used to work and doesn’t anymore.

Where to start

The techniques that help most here.

If you’re too close to see this clearly, step back with The Cloud. If you’re not sure what’s yours to carry versus theirs, start with Own It.

05 The CloudWiden the view around what you’ve found.
09 Own ItSeparate your part from theirs and own your part without defending it.
Common questions

Good to know.

Is this for the parent, or the adult child?

Either. The techniques work from either side. What’s usually different is what each person is stuck on: the parent is often holding onto a shape the relationship has outgrown, and the adult child is often trying to change it without a conversation neither of them knows how to start.

What if my adult child won’t engage in this kind of work?

You can still do the internal work: naming your part, and finding what’s actually yours to change, without them in the room.

Often, not always

What else this tends to bring up.

This isn’t about being similar. It’s about what shows up in the same season, in Bill’s experience. If more than one of these fits right now, that’s normal, not a sign you’re more stuck than usual.
