Bill Ferguson III
For more than twenty years, Bill Ferguson III has worked as a professional mediator, sitting with people at some of the hardest, most conflicted moments of their lives. Divorce. Family and business disputes. Career decisions. Internal struggles no one else could see.
Early on he thought the job was the agreement. Get two people to something they can both live with, and you’re done. But after a few hundred of them, he started to notice the order was backwards. Getting to an agreement wasn’t what created movement. Movement was what created agreement. When someone took even one real step, the pressure eased. Options appeared. Conversations that had been impossible got manageable.
So he changed what he was doing. He started paying attention to what actually got people moving: a question asked in a certain order, a step small enough that someone would actually take it. When something worked, he wrote it down after the session. What he asked, what shifted, what didn’t. He did that for years.
Then a client he’d helped through a collapsed business partnership called him a few weeks after their session. He told Bill that he had used the same techniques he learned in the sessions on something else entirely: a conversation with his adult daughter he’d been avoiding for more than a year.
Nothing about the techniques had changed. Only what he pointed them at.
Once Bill saw it, he saw it everywhere. What worked on two people at odds worked just as well on one person at odds with themself. The techniques Bill developed were never just about mediation. Mediation is just where Bill built them.
