The Unstuck Techniques

Eleven techniques.One way through.

Many people think being stuck is about the situation. It usually isn’t. It’s not knowing what to do with the situation you’re in. What follows is a set of practical techniques built over more than twenty years in the mediation room, for finding what’s actually keeping you stuck and moving through it, one honest step at a time. Not therapy. Not motivation.

STABILIZEFIND ITDECIDEMOVE

“Agreement doesn’t create movement; movement creates agreement. When people start to move, even a little, the pressure drops and new options show up.”— Bill Ferguson III

Where every session starts

Stabilize the Situation

Before any of the finding work begins, one question: what in your life right now is actually stable? Not perfect, just stable. Naming it, even three small things, loosens the sense that everything is an emergency and gets your thinking clear enough to start.

01

Stabilize the Situation

Shift your attention, even for a moment, to what’s already working. That’s what makes everything after it possible.

Part One

Finding the Real Problem

A lot of people are so overwhelmed that everything feels like the problem. These three techniques narrow it down to the one true point of stuckness, not to solve it yet, just to see it clearly.

02

Clear the Cache

Quiet the noise so you can see where you’re stuck.

03

Fear Mapping

Name the fear specifically enough that you can actually respond to it.

04

The Source Question

Trace the problem back to where it actually starts. Not where it shows up.

The Bridge

05 The Cloud

Part One finds where you’re stuck. Part Two decides what to do about it. The Cloud is what gets you from one to the other: it lifts you above the problem you just named so you can see more of what’s around it than you could from the ground. More options, more resources, more paths. And once you know how to use it, it’s there any time the view narrows again.

05

The Cloud

Lifts you above the problem so you can see everything around it.

Part Two

What To Do Next

Clarity isn’t the finish line. These three techniques turn what you’ve found into something small, real, and workable enough to actually act on.

06

Morsels

Break the next step down until it’s small enough that you’ll actually take it.

07

The Choice of Three

Build three real options and hold all three honestly before you choose.

08

Timeline Thinking

Put honest time estimates on what’s ahead, instead of an all-or-nothing deadline.

Part Three

Getting Unstuck

This part asks the most of you. To act under real conditions. To adjust when it doesn’t go the way you planned. And sometimes to decide that something behind you is finished, which is not the same as deciding it was a loss.

09

Own It

Separate your part from theirs, and own your part without defending it.

10

Action, Review, Course Correction

Take the action. Review what actually happened. Adjust and go again.

11

Completion, Not Over

Name what you’re still carrying, ask what no longer fits, and close the chapter.

Next step

Read it, or work through it together.

The book walks you through every technique with steps you actually do. Private sessions do the same work with Bill in the room.
